Chemistry, baby

In honor of the Chemistry exam I *think* I just did really well on... I'm going to share another great song. This song isn't the song I WANT to share with you by this band. The song I'd like to share by Noah and the Whale would be 5 Years Time. Everyone knows the song. Well. Most people. I'm pretty sure it's been on a commercial. It's just a happy, bouncy song. At least that's what it does to me. This is also a really good song from the same album (Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down)... AND Chemistry related! It's called 2 Atoms in a Molecule.

But now I look at love
Like being stabbed in the heart
You torture each other from day to day
And then one day you part
Most of the time it's misery
But there's some joy at the start
And for that, I'd say it's worth it

Everyone needs a personal DJ

So the other night while online I got to play DJ back and forth with a friend. Consequently, I now have a new love. I haven't stopped listening to this album for about two days now. I downloaded it as soon as he played this song for me. I had heard of the band before on my Indie rock station and took mental note. His voice is pretty unique (in a good way) and memorable. The song is called Fistful of Love by Antony and the Johnsons. The song is pretty sad, especially when you take the time to listen to the lyrics, but quite beautiful. It's been great music to relax to these last two days. The rest of the album, I am a Bird Now, is also pretty fantastic.

Check it out, enjoy, and thanks, Marshall.

Russian love

There's been a lot of news about the new film Two Lovers. The film stars Jaoquin Phoenix who recently had a quite ridiculous interview with David Letterman. I'd really like to see the movie. I'm a fan of his and of Gwyneth Paltrow. The film is supposed to be loosely based on a short story by Dostoevsky called White Nights. I'm a pretty big fan of Russian literature. This happened in high school while under the instruction of the wonderful Mr. Olon. I've remained very close with his family even now. Junior year of high school we read The Brothers Karamazov. I wasn't quite old enough to really appreictae it or even completely understand it. I appreciate the less confusing and less verbose Russian authors myself. Turgenev's Fathers and Sons is one of my all time favorite books along with Lermontov's A Hero of Our Time. I have a book of Turgenev's short stories I've been meaning to read when I have time. There's never enough time.

Anyway, all of that was a long way of saying that I did a little investigating to figure out which short story the movie was based on and came up with all of that. The short story written by Dostoevsky begins with a quote from Turgenev. I have no clue which writing the piece is from (if any). I really liked it and thought I'd share.

"And was it his destined part
Only one moment in his life
To be close to your heart?
Or was he fated from the start
to live for just one fleeting instant,
within the purlieus of your heart."

Associated feelings

Every once in a while a day will occur that reminds me of another
specific time, place, or location. It's usually just the way the air
feels, a smell, or a combination of things. Tonight while I was
driving home from my late class, the air and the road reminded me of
the night my niece was born. She was born on November 24th in 2005. It
was a crisp night, similar to tonight. I got the phone call after the
sun had just set that my sister was close to labor. I immediately
hopped in my car to head to Prince Frederick where Amaya was to be
born. While stuck in traffic on the beltway, I received another phone
called telling me she had been born. I wasn't too upset about missing
the birth. I know I wouldn't have been able to be in the room or
handle being in the room. And the baby would need to be cleaned up and
everything before we could really hold her.

Holding my niece for the first time was overwhelming and frightening.
It was weird to consider my younger sister a mother while I was only
19 myself. I can still see Amaya all bundled up in her ace bandage.
She had a broken collarbone. She was a biiiig baby. I'm fairly certain
she was over 9 lbs though I can't recall the exact weight. Her face
was puffy and swollen but she was still the most beautiful thing I had
ever seen.

After nearly three and a half years... she's still the most beautiful
thing I've ever seen.

Booty shakin'

When I want the good music, I just request something "booty shakin'". This could be really... anything. The only requirement is that it makes me want to shake my booty. I heard this booty shakin' song on my indie station. She was on the list of top so many artists that are blowing up the on line music scene. I had heard of her before and made a mental note to download her stuff. Then I heard another song which triggered that memory into action. So here we are with an awesome new artist to listen to. Lykke Li is a Swedish singer. If you like this song, let me know. I have a cover that she did of The Kings Of Leon's Knocked Up (another freakin' awesome song... and you know how I feel about covers).

25 facts

I've been tagged by a shit ton of people... Melissa, Kim, and even Mandy. I may post it on facebook later but for now I want it on my blog. I don't know how good my facts are... but they're weird facts and facts nonetheless. And I just spent a half an hour coming up with them. So you better appreciate them (or at least learn something new about me).

25 Facts

1. I think I have an oral fixation. I used to bite my nails until I consciously stopped. Even then I still sometimes nibble. I can’t even tell you how many pen caps I’ve destroyed.

2. When I was little I wanted to grow up to become a super model. Now at 22 I’ve considered trying plus sized modeling at some point.

3. I am ridiculously afraid of bugs. I can’t explain it and it isn’t even really logical (considering I work outside often). I tense up and scream like a child when they’re around.

4. Men with red beards excite me for the simple fact that I think about the possibility of making adorable red headed babies with them.

5. I’ve never really had a sweet tooth. I’ll eat carbs and grease ANY day over chocolate and sugar.

6. My left boob is smaller than the right one.

7. I have the ability to wiggle my pinky toe and pinch people with the others. It’s really quite bizarre.

8. I’d eventually like 4 kids, though I’d be ok with less.

9. The idea of having even 1 kid come out of my vag has occasionally scared me to the point of no longer wanting children.

10. I’ve only stolen one thing in my entire life. It was an ID bracelet from J.C.Penny’s with the letter J on it. I never wore it out of shame.

11. I HATE sleeping in socks.

12. I have a weird attachment to old, comfortable clothing and shoes. There are several pairs of jeans and flip flops that really belong in a trash can but I can’t stand to part with. I’ve even had nightmares about my mom throwing some of my stuff away. I’m currently trying to think of how I can either salvage them or turn them into something new.

13. I have some pretty ridiculous dreams, and often. Sometimes I take naps just because what’s going on when I’m awake is so much more boring than what I could be dreaming about.

14. I have 2 body pillows and 5 regular pillows on my bed.

15. I cuss like a sailor. My favorite curse word is cunt, which most people consider to be a really awful word. This being said, even the mention of the N word or the F word (slur for gay men) makes me unbelievably uncomfortable and unhappy.

16. I’m a grossly competitive person, occasionally competing with people without their knowledge. My competitive side also led to one of the ugliest games of Monopoly ever. I refuse to play that game ever again.

17. I have a number of irrational fears including but not limited to: zombies, leprechauns, having my back to an open door, opening my eyes in the shower and someone being in there with me, hidden cameras in the heating vents, etc. Basically… I am a crazy person.

18. It’s pretty weird how much I associate music with specific people and events in my life. This has ruined (though usually only momentarily) several artists and songs for me.

19. I made it a rule for myself a looong time ago to never be jealous of a person. Instead I usually only envy (and the strive for) specific things that person may have or a quality they possess.

20. I love a lot of things about myself. I won’t even bother to list them because it gets kind of ridiculous (I just tried). Know that my red hair and the fiery personality that comes with it is at the top of the list. This was definitely not an ability I was born with but just kind of happened on its own a couple of years ago.

21. Sometimes I wish I didn’t own a cell phone and have many times considered trying to live without it.

22. My favorite comfort food has to be a cheeseburger or macaroni and cheese.

23. The only big surprise I’ve ever had came on my 20th birthday when my good friend Mandy organized a surprise party for me several days before my actual birthday. I had decided to be left alone that day and turned off my phone to take a nap. Someone was sent to get me. I was tricked into driving to pick Mandy up (which pissed me off). I then had to be talked into going inside to get her. When the door opened at least 20-30 friends were inside the house along with my mom, sister, dad, and niece. I backed out of the house and started to cry like a little bitch. No one has ever done something nearly as sweet and special for me before or after that.

24. I take 5 minute showers. 5 minutes max. Usually less.

25. I’ve made the decision to shave my head at some point during my life. I made the decision just because it’d be so completely ridiculous and weird. Oh, and I like how shaved heads feel.

What's going on

It's cold outside and we didn't get the snow I had hoped for. I wanted my class tonight to be cancelled so I didn't have to skip it. Now I'm just going to skip it. Whatever. I emailed the professor to let him know what's up. It's a student guided class anyway. We break into groups and teach ourselves the material every class. I can do that from the comfort of my bed tomorrow night without annoying group members.

I'm skipping to get my work out in. I didn't wake up early enough to do so this morning. I was exhausted and just didn't want to get out of bed. I'm also going to a show tonight at The Black Cat in DC. Passion Pit is playing. If you don't remember them, I posted a song by them here a couple months back. If you didn't listen then, you should now.

In other news, I've been working out pretty much daily. I set up my routine so that I work 5 days on and 2 off (those being the weekend days). I've also been eating differently. I won't necessarily say better because that isn't really true. I'm not dieting as much as I'm keeping track of what I eat and trying to stick around or under 2000 calories. It really isn't even that hard. You just have to look for good food that isn't terrible for you. There is more of that out there than I thought. I've also quit drinking juice and soda. Granted it's only been like a week and a half... that has to be making a difference. The only non-water I've had to drink in that time frame were the two beers last Friday and my Chai I had today (which was only 170 calories). I'm not going to weigh myself. Probably for at least a month. That isn't the reason I'm doing this. I want to be in shape again. I'd love to play competitive sports again or even try a new one. If I'm in good enough shape come spring/summer I think I'll try my hand at rugby.

"I fuc*&@$ hate games!"

Found this right after watching the Mr. Bucket commercial. It made me
laugh so hard I cried... probably because I had one when I was younger
and I remember my sister and I hiding them in the closet when we got
scared of them.

Another cover

Another amazing cover for your enjoyment. This band is one of my
favorites, and covered one of my other favorites (both the song and
artist). The White Stripes, and Ted Leo also covered this song (though
Ted Leo only kind of... sample-covered in his cover of Kelly
Clarkson's Since You Been Gone). Regardless, I hope you know the
original. It is amazing in its own right. The Arcade Fire is also an
amazing band I could listen to non-stop and probably never get tired
of. The two together... damn. It's like peanut butter and chocolate...
BUT BETTER.
